MCS Management Systems Review

Independent review of MCS-related management systems, documentation, operational controls and supporting evidence.

MCS · Microgeneration Certification Scheme

What it is

MCS is more than a technical installation standard

MCS is a certification scheme covering low-carbon and microgeneration technologies. Its requirements extend beyond the technical specification of an installation. Depending on the scope and technology, organisations must demonstrate appropriate processes, responsibilities, competence, customer-facing controls, records and evidence.

The current redeveloped MCS installer scheme is structured around scheme requirements, customer protection and conformity assessment. MCS documentation also includes technology-specific requirements. The certification process is carried out by Certification Bodies operating within the MCS framework.

Before assessment

A review before certification assessment

For an organisation preparing for MCS certification, maintaining certification, changing scope or responding to identified weaknesses, an independent review can provide a structured assessment of whether the documented system and available evidence are aligned with the applicable scheme requirements.

The review is not a substitute for the Certification Body's assessment. It is designed to identify inconsistencies, missing evidence, unclear responsibilities and areas requiring attention before the formal conformity assessment process.

Scope first

The MCS framework is scope-specific

MCS requirements depend on the organisation's activities and the technologies within scope. The applicable requirements therefore need to be established before the review rather than assuming that one generic checklist applies to every MCS business.

The MCS framework covers multiple technologies and has evolved into a redeveloped installer scheme. The current scheme includes the Installer Operating Requirements, Customer Commitment and conformity-assessment arrangements, alongside technology-specific standards and other scheme documents.

The approach

What makes the DAN AUDITS approach different

The review is approached from a third-party certification-audit perspective rather than as a generic document-writing exercise.

  • Evidence is considered alongside the documented process.
  • Responsibilities are considered against what the organisation actually does.
  • Records are considered for consistency, traceability and completeness.
  • The relationship between procedures, operational activity and objective evidence is examined.
  • Potential points of non-conformity or clarification are identified without making the Certification Body's certification decision.

Technical capability

Relevant audit experience. Clear distinction from certification.

DAN AUDITS' MCS review capability is based on third-party certification-audit experience, management-system audit competence and direct engagement with applicable MCS requirements. DAN AUDITS does not represent this capability as an MCS Lead Auditor qualification or as MCS certification.

MCS certification is performed by the relevant MCS Certification Body. DAN AUDITS provides an independent review of the applicable requirements, documented arrangements, controls and supporting evidence. The review does not constitute certification, accreditation or a Certification Body assessment.

What it is not

What DAN AUDITS does not do

  • Issue MCS certificates
  • Act as an MCS Certification Body
  • Make certification decisions
  • Represent an organisation before an MCS Certification Body
  • Guarantee that certification will be awarded
  • Carry out installation work or technical commissioning
  • Provide engineering design approval
  • Create false or retrospective evidence of conformity

What we review

  • Scope of MCS activities and applicable scheme requirements
  • Management-system documentation and documented processes
  • Roles, responsibilities and nominated/technical personnel arrangements
  • Competence and evidence of competence relevant to the applicable scope
  • Customer-facing processes and required information
  • Design, installation, commissioning and handover records, where applicable
  • Operational controls and record-keeping
  • Supplier and subcontractor controls, where applicable
  • Complaints, non-conformities and corrective action
  • Internal monitoring, review and evidence of continuing conformity
  • Technology-specific documentation and evidence relevant to the review scope
  • Readiness of the documented system and evidence for formal certification assessment

Typical evidence reviewed

  • MCS scheme and scope documentation
  • Policies, procedures and process descriptions
  • Organisation charts, responsibilities and nominated-person arrangements
  • Competence and training records
  • Customer documentation and pre-sale information, where applicable
  • Design and technical records
  • Installation, commissioning and handover records
  • Product, supplier and subcontractor records
  • Complaints and customer-protection records
  • Internal checks, monitoring and corrective actions
  • Records demonstrating ongoing conformity

What you receive

What the review produces

  • A written independent MCS review
  • A structured assessment of documented arrangements and available evidence
  • Identification of inconsistencies, gaps and points requiring clarification
  • Identification of weaknesses in the link between requirements, process and evidence
  • A practical list of areas requiring attention before formal assessment or further certification activity

Who it is for

Who this review is for

  • Businesses preparing for initial MCS certification
  • Existing MCS-certified organisations reviewing continuing conformity
  • Organisations adding or changing technologies within scope
  • Businesses preparing for a certification assessment or reassessment
  • Organisations that have received non-conformities and need an independent review of the underlying system and evidence

Related frameworks

MCS and ISO 9001

MCS requirements should not be treated as interchangeable with ISO 9001.

ISO 9001 can provide a broader quality-management framework but does not automatically demonstrate conformity with MCS requirements.

Where both are relevant, the review can consider how the two sets of requirements interact without treating them as the same framework.

FAQs

MCS review: common questions

Does DAN AUDITS provide MCS certification?

No. MCS certification is provided through the MCS certification framework by the relevant Certification Body. DAN AUDITS provides an independent review.

Is there an MCS Lead Auditor qualification?

DAN AUDITS does not claim a formal personal 'MCS Lead Auditor' qualification. Its MCS review capability is based on third-party certification-audit experience, management-system audit competence and direct engagement with applicable MCS requirements.

Can the review replace the Certification Body's assessment?

No. The review is independent and preparatory. The Certification Body retains responsibility for the formal conformity assessment and certification decision.

Can you guarantee MCS certification after the review?

No. No independent reviewer should guarantee the outcome of a separate Certification Body assessment.

Do you review the technical installation itself?

The service is primarily a management-system, documentation, controls and evidence review. Any technical or site assessment must be defined specifically according to the applicable MCS scope.

Can MCS be reviewed alongside ISO 9001?

Yes. Where both are relevant, the review can consider how the two sets of requirements interact without treating them as the same framework.

Start with a short intro call

If your organisation is preparing for MCS certification, reassessment, scope change or an internal review, DAN AUDITS can first establish the applicable scope and determine whether an independent document-and-evidence review is appropriate. Independent, fixed-fee, and commission-free.
